Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila has reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to promoting transparency in the administration of justice by actively engaging with the media, which he described as a key component of the governance system. Dr. Malila emphasized that justice must not be carried out behind closed doors and highlighted the Judiciary’s efforts to enhance openness through media partnerships.
“Justice cannot be dispensed in secret we are aware of this,” he said. “That is why we have started allowing the live broadcasting of some court proceedings.” He made these remarks yesterday when he hosted court reporters from various media outlets who paid a courtesy call on him.
The Chief Justice acknowledged the vital role journalists play in disseminating information to the public and encouraged media practitioners to ensure their reporting is factual and balanced in order to combat misinformation. He reiterated the Judiciary’s resolve to uphold the open dispensation of justice, working hand-in-hand with the media to inform citizens about legal processes and court outcomes.
Dr. Malila also expressed his gratitude to the visiting journalists, who presented him with a Valentine’s gift and checked on his well-being following a road accident in October last year that resulted in a fractured limb. “I’m very delighted that you thought about coming to see us. I must confirm that I am doing fine I’m recovering well. I had my review a week before last,” he shared.
Speaking on behalf of the journalists, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) reporter Hannock Kasama commended Dr. Malila for his dedication to making the Judiciary more accessible to the public through ongoing reforms.
