ZICTA fines Airtel K5.2 million over June data outage

The Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) has imposed a K5.2 million sanction on Airtel Zambia as compensation to consumers, following a major data service outage experienced on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, ZICTA Director General Collins Mbulo says the penalty follows the Authority’s investigation and assessment of information submitted by Airtel.
He has stated that ZICTA was not satisfied with the mobile operator’s responses and found the company in breach of regulatory obligations.
Among the violations cited were Airtel’s failure to resolve critical network faults within the stipulated timelines and its failure to notify both ZICTA and consumers within one hour of the outage, as required by regulation.
In addition to the compensation, Airtel has also been fined 828,000 Kwacha for contravening provisions under the Quality of Service Guidelines and the Consumer Protection Code of Conduct Guidelines.
