On November 27, 2023, an attempt to disrupt a live programme on Mazabuka Radio occurred during the “Community Issues” breakfast show. The programme, dedicated to discussing various community matters in Mazabuka, faced interference from UPND cadres.
Mavis Muchiya, the Programmes Manager at Mazabuka Radio, had invited former UPND District Chairman to clarify specific party issues. However, a faction of UPND cadres, representing the current District Chairman, tried to disrupt the show citing that the former chairman is peddling misinformation. They were prevented from entering the studio by a vigilant worker who warned of police involvement, prompting their departure.
Later, another group, claiming to be sent by UPND officials, returned, stating they were directed to halt the programme due to perceived alignment with an opposing faction. Police intervention dispersed this group, allowing the programme to continue without further disruption.
On December 5, 2023, the radio station invited the UPND chairman of elections to clarify specific individuals in office. However, the chairman declined to mention names, citing the office bearers’ awareness of the constitution, and none of the involved cadres participated.
Jacob Malambo, the Anchor of the programme, reported that the cadres who stormed the station threatened him and warned against attending UPND functions. Since the incident, Mr. Malambo has refrained from attending UPND functions and has not received further threats.
