The Zambia Police Service has been called upon to investigate individuals behind the circulation of false claims on social media alleging that President Hakainde Hichilema is unwell.
In a statement, United Party for National Development (UPND) Secretary General Batuke Imenda condemned the spread of what he described as malicious propaganda, and urged law enforcement to take action against those responsible.
Imenda emphasized that the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act enacted by the previous administration—will be used to prosecute those spreading falsehoods about the Head of State. He noted that the law addresses various digital offences, including cyberbullying and misinformation.
“There is a law in place that deals with such crimes, and it will be applied accordingly. Even those sharing the false information will be held accountable to set an example for would-be offenders,” he said.
He urged the public to dismiss the fake news with the contempt it deserves and issued a stern warning to all involved in spreading the claims. “We warn those circulating such fake news, regardless of who they are, that the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act punishes not only the originators but also those who share such criminal content,” he said. “We call on all doomsayers to stop this immediately.”
Imenda also advised opposition parties to engage in civil and responsible politics rather than resorting to unlawful tactics. He expressed disappointment that those who break the law are often the first to protest when held accountable for their actions.
