Police Clarify Arrest of Suspect Over Malicious Facebook Post

Lusaka, May 14, 2025 – The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Jeremiah Nkunika, a 27-year-old resident of an unmarked house on Chovu Chovu Road in Ng’ombe Compound, Lusaka. The arrest follows an incident on April 15, 2025, in which Mr. Nkunika allegedly published a false and malicious post on a Facebook page named Icilenkalipa mu Zambia.

Mr. Nkunika is currently detained at Kabwata Police Station and has been formally charged with the offence of Prohibition of Harassment and Humiliation, contrary to Section 22 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025. He is awaiting a court appearance.

In a related development, the Zambia Police Service has addressed misleading information published in the Daily Nation Newspaper, Volume 11, Issue 4385, dated May 14, 2025, which carried the headline: “Youth Nabbed for Posting Crying Emojis in WhatsApp Group.” The police have clarified that this report is inaccurate and does not reflect the actual nature of the offence.

The Zambia Police urges all media outlets and practitioners to verify information with the appropriate authorities before publication. Inaccurate reporting can mislead the public and erode trust. Media institutions and journalists must act responsibly, and those who fail to do so should not claim victimization when held accountable.

The Police Service reiterates its commitment to enforcing the law and safeguarding digital spaces from defamation, cyberbullying, and the spread of false information.
