According to reports reaching MISA, Ziligone, who had identified himself with a press card, was slapped, dragged, and had his phone confiscated, while Malupande was threatened with violence. Both journalists later had their phones returned.

The attack sparked widespread condemnation from media bodies, including the Livingstone Press Club, the Lusaka Press Club, MISA Zambia, and Free Press Initiative, who described the incident as shocking, unacceptable, and a threat to democracy.

MISA Zambia said it was “deeply saddened” by the assault, stressing that such actions not only violate journalists’ rights but also create a hostile environment that undermines the media’s vital role in society. The organization further reminded security personnel that journalists are not enemies of the state but key partners in national development.

Media organizations noted that the incident occurred barely weeks after high-level police-media dialogue sessions aimed at building trust and ensuring journalists’ safety. They have demanded immediate disciplinary action against the officers involved, a public apology, and guarantees that such abuses will not be repeated.

“Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of any democratic society,” MISA Zambia Chairperson emphasized, urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and hold those responsible accountable.

The assault on the two journalists has heightened concerns over growing threats to press freedom in Zambia, with observers warning that unless decisive action is taken, the country risks fostering a climate of fear where truth is silenced.
