SERENJE RADIO JOURNALISTS ASSAULTED

Three (3) members of staff from Serenje FM in Serenje District of Central Province were on 8th April 2023, attacked with one assaulted by suspected UPND cadres during campaign for Muchinda Ward by-election.

The media personnel were following up a story on alleged clashes between the opposition Socialist Party (SP) and the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

It is alleged that Socialist Party had shot a UPND member during campaigns in the run up to the April 20, 2023, Muchinda Ward By-election.

Serenje District Commissioner Paul Masuwa alerted the radio station crew through a phone call that a UPND member was shot at by SP members and were on their way to the Police to report the matter.

Three members of staff from the radio sation, Male Kapema, Enoch Champo and Sheila Kalunga, rushed to the scene to confirm the allegations. Upon arrival to the scene, suspected UPND cadres believed to be from outside Serenje hit Sheila Kalunga three times at the back for filming their protest at the Police Station.

The attack was only stopped by a quick intervention from the Police Officers.
